You're Not The Boss Of Me: No Fishing!

Jun 15, 2025    Russ Smith

1. What bosses do you remember having? What was good about them? What was bad about them?

2. In the message, we looked at the “sea of forgetfulness”, which isn’t directly in the Bible but the idea comes from these Bible verses:

Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love. Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean! (Micah 7:18-19)

And also this:

And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins. (Hebrews 8:12)

What do you think about the idea that God chooses not to remember our sins?

3. Russ told a story he remembers hearing from his pastor:

God has sunk your sin in the depths of the ocean, in the sea of forgetfulness.

And God puts up a sign that says “No fishing”.

The problem is that Guilt comes back and tries to fish.

Do you feel like Guilt is trying to fish for mistakes and sin in your life? What’s happening there?

4. The practical application of this message is to say to guilt: No - you’re not the boss of me! and No - no fishing! Is that something you’re willing to try doing this week?

5. Darth Vader said to Lando Calrissian: "I’m altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further." God altered the deal with us, and now we have a new deal with God. The old deal was that our mistakes (our sins) were counted against us. The new deal is that when we confess our mistakes & sin to God, he forgives us. What do you think about this new deal? Do you believe it, or are you still considering it?
