Whale, I Didn't See That Coming: Running From God, Chased By Grace

1. What’s a “Well, I didn’t see that coming!” moment from your life? (It could be something funny, surprising, disappointing, or life-changing.) What happened, and how did it affect you?

2. Read Jonah 1:1-2. Jonah's story begins with a clear call from God and an immediate decision to run from Him. Why do you think Jonah chose to go in the opposite direction? In what ways can you relate to a time when you knew the right thing to do, but chose another path?

3. Read Jonah 1:3. In the message Garry talked about our own "But Jonah..." moments. If you were to insert your name into Jonah 1:3 ("But ___ got up and went the other direction"), what situation in your life comes to mind?

4. Read Jonah 1:4. In the message Garry suggested that the storm “God sent” was an expression of God's grace rather than God's punishment. How does that idea challenge or change the way you view difficult seasons in life? Can you think of a storm in your past that eventually led to growth or a deeper relationship with God?

5. Read Psalm 139:7-8. We’re reminded that there is nowhere we can go where God is not present. Does that encourage you or frighten you? Why/why not? Why do you think people try to run from God? What are some modern-day "Tarshishes" people use to avoid dealing with God or the things he is asking of them?

6. Read Jonah 1:17. Chapter 1 ends with Jonah being swallowed by a great fish - a situation that probably felt like the end, but was actually God's provision. Have you ever experienced something that felt terrible in the moment but later realized God was using it for your good? What encouragement does Jonah's story give you about God's grace and second chances?
