German philosopher Karl Marx once famously said that religion is the opiate of the masses. But these days, opioids are the opiate of the masses.

If the good news of Easter is to be actual good news, it has to address men and women whose hearts are infected with all manner of trouble, whose hearts are empty of hope, who remain locked in the grip of addiction.

Thankfully, miraculously, it does. Easter in the age of fentanyl is the same as Easter ever has been. The message about the God who intervenes with unconditional love, at a great cost to himself, offering grace to everyone who has been checkmated in this life.
