The Meeting Place Nanaimo - Church For Everyone

This Nanaimo church is simply an ordinary bunch of people who have joined together for a spiritual journey to learn about and follow Jesus Christ. You'll find The Meeting Place to be an open place where people with questions of all kinds are welcome and are encouraged to participate. We believe that church can be different -- and if our casual, friendly atmosphere, compelling multimedia, great coffee and comfortable seats don't convince you...we're sure our message will!

Who's organizing all this, anyway?

Dave Koot

Originally from Richmond, BC, Pastor Dave Koot holds an undergraduate degree from Trinity Western University and a Masters of Arts degree in Counselling from Denver Seminary.

Dave is married to his best friend Colleen, and loves to spend time with his three daughters. Dave is passionate about his love for God, family, friends and a certain football team in Denver. His family has enjoyed the pristine beauty of living on Vancouver Island for the last 15 years.

Rod Kolke

Originally from Ontario, Rod now spends his time between Ladysmith BC and the internet. Most of the time he can be found sitting at his Mac, doing pushups, reading, or smiling at his family and friends. He loves coats with lots of pockets, really hot summer days, and finding hidden pirate treasure.

Seeing all sorts of different people using their God-given abilities together in the creation of something powerful and meaningful is one of the highlights of his life – and it happens all the time right here at TMP!

Rod Kolke - Communications

As music director at TMP since July of 2006, Mark spends his time helping people think about and experience God in new ways through music and the arts. He is excited about bringing the colourful variety of artists in the Nanaimo area together in the goal of sharing God’s love creatively with the world around us.

Beyond his obvious passion for tunes and lyrics, Mark is an avid hoarder (and occasional reader) of books, and can often be seen on a mountain bike or in a coffee shop, viewing the former as a form of penance for the guilty pleasures of the latter.

Kate longed for the feeling of belonging and having purpose in her life that she had lost when she moved to Nanaimo from her hometown of Clearwater 5 years ago with her husband Brent and two daughters Ariel and Cali.  God knew better than her the plans he had in store for her when she found The Meeting Place Church.

Educated in the Early Childhood field Kate has always gravitated to working with children.  As Kidz Place Director Kate feels privileged to teach, play and learn with her fantastic volunteer team and of course amazing kids.  In her ministry she hopes to be an encourager for children and to provide an atmosphere where children can be inspired, make a connection with God and feel safe to be their unique selves while having tons of fun!

In her spare time Kate loves to be with nature (especially kayaking in the ocean on a hot, sunny day), gardening, playing sports, working on home fix-it projects and being a part of the Alpha course.

Michael Donegani

Having traveled around the continent as a sound technician for a number of famous bands and musicians back in the day, Mike now lends his fine ear and nimble fingers to tweaking the sound at the Avalon Theater complex on Sunday mornings. Known for his great sense of humor and colorful footwear, Mike can usually be found standing resolutely behind the sound board, soundwave shock-blown hair streaming behind him. While others crumble at the merest hint of audio dissonance, the rare appearance of feedback elicits only a wry grin and a flick of the correct switch from Mike and those on his team.

Michael’s skill, great attitude and commitment to the team helps to create an environment where everyone can experience the touch of something profoundly meaningful every Sunday morning.

I grew up in a lot of places, but I guess the most impressionable place would have been Saskatchewan. I know what some of you are thinking and no, I am not a Riders fan. I am happy to say that I enjoy watching the Canucks and the Lions. I grew up in youth groups and churches. My Dad was my pastor and my Mom was my youth pastor. So I suppose that is where I learned a lot of what I utilize now.

I myself am a lover of music, art, and cheese. I have been involved in drama since I was in gr 7 and have been playing and writing music since before then. And cheese, it is just extremely good. I love tasting all types. As it sits, my favorite is a Cheese called Coastal. You find it in Costco, a mere sparkling diamond amongst the many rare gems under its roof. I really enjoy exaggeration. My heart is with TMP youth and I am loving every minute of it, and I have no doubt that I am right where God wants me to be. He stretches me continually and reveals his truths, as simple as some may be, in wondrous ways. I am supremely pumped to be covered in the dust of my Rabbi.

Garry Firth

Garry Firth - Life Group Coordinator

If there are three things in this world that Garry Firth is passionate about, they are coffee, people, and coffee; and there is nothing he loves more than pairing these passions together. It is only fitting that someone like Garry, who loves God, and connecting with people over a nice hot cup of java, heads up our Connections/ Life Groups Ministry here at TMP. Joining our team in September 2008, Garry can be found more often than not, at his home away from home, The Buzz Coffeehouse. If you can’t find Garry there, then he is deep under the sea diving for one of God’s weirdest creations, the geoduck (look that one up on wikipedia), or driving his wife, three daughters, and son-in-law crazy with bad jokes.

Aside from coffee, diving, and generally bad joke-telling, Garry’s other passions include walking across rooms, coffee, hitting large things with sticks, coffee, falling off treadmills, coffee, creating culinary masterpieces with his new indoor grill, coffee, texting Dave, Rod and Mark, on his blackberry and, did we mention…coffee?

Garry is truly passionate about God and His ministry and has years and years of insight to share with you. That, and a cup of coffee!

Ca-Ching !  Money. For some people it represents security, comfort, or freedom. For others it is a source of power, status, and the main object of their desires. Our views and attitudes about money have significant spiritual ramifications.

Meet Eric Kuehnel. Math was always Eric's favorite subject and he enjoys public speaking and helping people. That's why he loves teaching the Good Sense Budget Course and providing finance related educational seminars here at The Meeting Place. When he's not busy solving the great puzzles of the financial world, Eric likes to be in the beautiful outdoors, fishing, hiking or Kayaking, preferably with his wife and children. As a reward for good behaviour, Mark Lee sometimes lets Eric play keyboards or guitar with the music team on Sunday mornings.

Eric also has the privilege of working with the exceptionally talented and dedicated group of people on the TMP operations team. They let him come to the monthly meetings because he is willing to give free financial advice. Ca-Ching!
